ABOUT AHLAM SHALABI
The Endless Voyager
Ahlam Shalabi is a Swiss, Saudi, and Lebanese artist whose life has spanned continents, cultures, and a journey of self-discovery. Currently residing between Switzerland and the Middle East, she draws inspiration from the vibrant experiences of a life lived across borders.
An autodidact, Ahlam’s path to art was unconventional. Despite social and cultural pressures, particularly while living in Saudi Arabia, she pursued her passion discreetly, sharing her work only with close friends and collectors until her first public exhibition in 2003 at the United Nations in Geneva. This pivotal moment set her on a path that has since seen her art exhibited globally.
Ahlam’s work is a reflection of her deep curiosity and thirst for knowledge, enabling her to explore diverse themes, including femininity, social upheaval, nature, and political issues. Her art also delves into personal and existential themes like love, war, chaos, and serenity, offering profound reflections on human existence. Ahlam sees beauty in life’s contradictions, from the elegance of femininity to the devastation of a nuclear disaster like Fukushima, and even the primal force of water—a dual symbol of purity and fear.
Her style is characterized by a careful choice of colors and compositions that convey unity, balance, and harmony. Each color holds meaning, and she meticulously selects tones to complement each other, creating a signature aesthetic. Her artistic journey began with still-life paintings, inspired by the classical depictions of everyday objects that captured their beauty and detail. She has since expanded to larger canvases, favoring oils and acrylics for their vibrancy and texture, while also exploring contemporary and abstract forms.
Ahlam’s work is deeply personal and evocative. Female silhouettes in her paintings communicate raw emotions, from sensuality to vulnerability, capturing moments of tension and release. Her landscapes reflect her love for nature, inspired by her travels and the overlooked beauty of the natural world. Her paintings embody the energy of fleeting moments—a quiet walk by the sea, a flower’s transient beauty, or a stranger’s peaceful solitude—infusing her art with a quiet yet profound energy.
Driven by a belief in art’s transformative power, Ahlam sees each canvas as a story and an expression of her own inner world. Her work is a message of beauty within chaos, of peace within struggle, and of resilience within vulnerability. With every brushstroke, she invites viewers into her world, sharing her deepest reflections and, above all, her unwavering commitment to finding harmony in life’s myriad complexities.
Ahlam is the visionary Founder and Vice-President of The Art Association, a Swiss non-profit dedicated to fostering peace and understanding through the universal language of art. Under her guidance, The Art Association creates a platform for cultural exchange, dialogue, and healing, empowering artists worldwide to bridge divides and inspire harmony. Driven by a belief in art’s transformative power, Ahlam champions initiatives that not only celebrate creativity but also support art education, therapy, and public murals, helping to build stronger, more compassionate communities.
